What is the Stock Market Game?

The Stock Market Game is a ten-week Internet based stock trading simulation offered in the fall and spring. It was developed by the Foundation for Investor Education in the 1970’s.  It encourages students to learn about the American economic system and the stock market while applying math, social studies, business, language arts and technology skills.

How Does the Stock Market Game Program Work?

After registering teams of up to 5 students at http://www.stockmarketgame.org, a login ID and password is issued for each team. This information is used to access the team’s own online trading account. Using the newspaper and the Internet, teams learn the basics of investing, research companies and make decisions about how to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks on the NASDAQ, New York and American stock exchanges. In this realistic simulation, trades are made online using the actual ticker symbols and real time pricing. Portfolios are updated daily and monitored throughout the session. The SMG is very flexible in terms of class time and the number of computers needed.

How Does the SMG Program Address the TEKS Requirements?

Teachers use the Stock Market Game and related activities to teach and reinforce required skills in many subject areas. Correlations have been developed that align the SMG program with the TEKS requirements in economics, math, social studies, and business education. These documents are available on this website. Select TEKS/SMG Correlation from the menu.

Who Can Participate?

Teachers can register students of all ability levels in grades 4-12 and post-secondary courses. It can be offered as a regular classroom activity or as an extracurricular program. The program is also open to adults.

What Do I Need To Know?

No previous knowledge of the stock market is required. An online Teacher Support Center contains a comprehensive collection of helpful information. It includes curriculum materials, a lesson planning guide and a "Getting Started" tutorial. They include an advisor’s handbook, lesson plans and student handouts. A Help Desk is available throughout the year and can be accessed by phone or email. Teacher training is offered in many locations across the state. Click here to see location and dates.
